An old house in Selbyville still holds its secrets. And on Halloween night, it will transform completely.
Selbyville’s Haunted Library will open for one night, during trick-or-treating on Monday, Oct. 31, from 6 to 8 p.m.
“It’s lot of fun,” said librarian and organizer Ronshell “Shelly” Purnell. “Every year it gets a little scarier.”
Like many a haunted house, the free attraction asks guests to face zombies, circus freaks, farm horrors and an eerie cornfield.
“It brings more attention the library … makes the kids a little more interested in the library,” Purnell said. “We are, I want to say, the only ones in Sussex County that does the haunted library,” with new thrills every year.
The attraction is recommended for those 7 or older. Donations are accepted. Guides will lead groups of eight to 10 visitors at a time.
“We don’t touch anyone — no hands-on,” Purnell said. “We just want them to come through and have fun.”
Children get free Halloween candy after escaping the ghouls.
The library will close Saturday, Oct. 29, and Monday, Oct. 31, to undergo preparations by more than two dozen volunteers.
“Patrons look at us [like], ‘All librarians do is say, “Shh.”’ So it’s really cool to know that we can do more than that. We can turn a library into a haunted house,” Purnell said.
